Effect of SVC on Steady State Voltage Collapse Phenomena

To meet the ever increasing load demands in a power system and to satisfy the stability and reliability criteria, the existing transmission lines have been forced to operate closer to their security limits. As a result, several voltage instability incidents have been reported all over the globe. One of the major being the voltage collapse problems in power systems which have been a permanent concern for the electric utilities, as several major black outs throughout the world have been directly associated to this phenomena. A prominent solution to above problems is to use some efficient controls with the help of FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission Systems) devices. The main factor causing voltage collapse is the inability of the power system to meet the demand for power. In this paper FACTS device SVC is used to provide appropriate compensation and its effect on margin to voltage collapse is studied. Keywords— FACTS, SVC, Voltage Collapse, Voltage Instability
